LABBE FAMILY

Family photo sessions are some of my favorite things to photograph.

And today I want to share with you just a sample of the lovely Labbe Family Photosession at the Punta Cana Resort & Club. It was indeed a beautiful afternoon for me to meet the exquisite Labbe family in the gardens of the villa they were renting in Punta Cana for their annual family vacations in the Dominican Republic.

Photographing families it is immensely exciting, and a gratifying profession, but let’s face it, planning a family photo sessions can be challenging especially for the family itself. That’s why I would like to share a few tips to help you get the most out of your family photo session experience.

Scroll down to read some tips that I hope will be useful to help turn your family photo session into an enjoyable experience from beginning to end.

Some tips to help you have a wonderful Family Photosession

  1. Choose your clothes with care.

Chose your family’s clothes way in advance, and make sure that your outfit choices are attractive but, most importantly, comfortable. What would do like your dream family photos to look like? If you want them to look elegant and soft, chose a palette of neutral colors and soft, flowing fabrics. For example, creams, very soft pastels, oatmeals, light browns, tans, grays, and slate blues. If instead, you want them to show the fun and spunky side of your family, choose to complement colors (avoid matchy, matchy) with bold accent colors, such as hues of gray with yellow or bright red accents. Add fun accessories like unique sunglasses, scarves, headbands, hats, etc. to add a modern twist and sassy flair to your images.

  1. Make sure you are all, well-rested and well-fed.

Do not schedule your photo session around your child’s nap or bedtime. The best time for beautiful lighting is the two hours before sunset and after sunrise.

If this is not a good time for your children, we may need to discuss this matter more in-depth. It’s nothing to overstress about it; We may be able to shoot at another time of day in open shade areas that will give your skin a beautiful hue and put a sparkle in your eyes.

Never show up to a photo shoot on an empty stomach. In plenty of cases, families come to a photo session with dinner scheduled at the end. If this is your plan, please give everyone a healthy snack before our photoshoot.

  1.  Allow plenty of time to get ready.

Although 90% of the time, our photoshoots are outdoors, so there is a lot of fun and movement involved, moms are often running around before our photoshoots, to make sure that their family is ready and well put. I like to encourage mothers to get their hair and makeup professionally done. So mom’s can focus on their preparation for the pictures. When a mom feels pretty and confident, it always reflects on the rest of the family. Allow plenty of time for showers, baths, dressing, and grooming, so that your complete family is ready well before it’s time to head out for our shooting.

  1.  Dads please, please, please be active and joyful participants.

Dads, please genuinely and joyfully participate. Often, dads dread the family photo session, but fathers, please understand how important capturing your family is. Family photos are so essential and so treasured. These images will be your legacy when your children are grown, and with their families someday. Please, please, dads, joyfully partake in your family photo session. I promise that once you see the happy smile on your wife’s face and the fantastic photographs, you will be glad you gave this time to your family.

  1. Cheese is for crackers.

Please, parents, leave the “cheese” at home. Cheese is for crackers. Too often, parents or any other family member will stand behind the camera and yell, “Say cheese to the photographer kids!”

Demanding for young children to look at the camera to smile will only stress your children out (not to mention us) and will result in strained, unnatural, and often unflattering photographs. Please step back and allow us to interact with your children naturally. Wich will result in natural and pretty smiles. Help us capture the true essence of your child’s personality by talking with and coaxing out those smiles naturally and easily.

  1. Have fun and enjoy the family time

Enjoy every minute of it. Give your wife a sweet kiss. Please pick up your small children and toss them into the air. Make silly jokes to make them bell laugh. Whisper to your husband how much you love and appreciate him for dedicating this time to your family. Run, Laugh, Giggle, Joke, Embrace, Kiss, Snuggle, Play, doing these things will allow us to document real emotions and the true beauty of your family. Show us who you are so that we have the opportunity to document your love through our lens.

  1. Bring an activity that your family enjoys doing together.

My most successful family photo sessions have incorporated an activity that the family loves doing together; this gives everyone something to do with their hands and feet, engages the little ones, and brings an authentic smile to your faces.

Do your family like to read together? Let’s bring along some books. Is your favorite dessert ice cream? Some ice cream bars or drumsticks will serve for some hilarious and sweet captures. Love to play board games or cards? Let’s plan to play a round of Uno or Monopoly during your family photo session. So many ideas: football, piggyback rides, races, bike riding, hiking, singing, picnics, the list is endless.

  1.  Remember this: NOT everyone needs to be looking and smiling at the camera at the same time.

Our photography style is a lot about documenting our subjects engaging and interacting with each other; therefore, not every photograph needs to have everybody looking at the camera and smiling at the same time. Forget about the camera and the photographer. Engage genuinely as a family and keep loving on each other; your eyes will be on your family members, your smile will be natural and gorgeous, and we’ll have the opportunity to take some beautiful and authentic photographs. Photographs that will depict your family’s love and genuine connection, and I promise you these will be the ones you will cherish the most.

We hope these tips will guide you into our process, hence our together results in a successful photoshoot and ultimately gorgeous, timeless family images that your family will treasure for lifetimes and generations to come.
